Individuals Story

K is a 21-year-old gentleman with a learning disability, significant epilepsy, is PEG fed and has microcephaly. He moved into one of our homes five months ago for a period of respite. Prior to moving in, he had always resided at the family home with his mother and grandmother. He also has a sister with whom he maintains a close relationship. This gentleman attends college four days a week to build, learn and maintain the existing life skills that he has.

The information that we were given regarding this gentleman was that he also displayed some behaviours that challenge, such as pinching, spitting, pulling hair, pulling at his PEG site all to seek the attention of those around him. Due to these complex behaviours he was also to be supported 2:1 for all community activities. We were also led to believe that this gentleman was unable to participate in any aspect of his personal care. Story continued below...

After Joining White Horse Care Trust

Since K has joined us we have seen a very different gentleman than the picture that we were originally given relating to most aspects of his daily life. We have been able to prompt, encourage and watch this delightful individual maximise his potential in such a short period of time that I am excited to say that I truly believe that we can build further on his existing skills thus enhancing his quality of life.

In this period of time we have encouraged K to participate in his own personal care. He is now able to indicate his choices relating to the clothes that he chooses to wear. We have observed his body language, facial expressions and eye contact. K has been encouraged to wash his own hands, face and arms, clean his own teeth and choose his own toiletries to use. We have also encouraged K to make gestures such as a salute, he will sign “thank you” and “sorry” to us. It is a delight to see when he also blows kisses to us. He is happy to participate in daily chores such as hoovering, polishing and mopping the floors. Though K is PEG fed, he enjoys the social aspect of cooking and meal preparation and we actively encourage him to do so as the pleasure that he gets from this is clearly immense.
The feedback that we have had from other healthcare professionals has been encouraging. It was noted recently at a hospital out-patient appointment that they have never seen him so relaxed as he was sitting in the waiting room with 2 support workers, contentedly reading a magazine whereas before he would be trying to grab at people and any items that were within his reach so that he could throw them.

We have been in close contact with the college that K attends and they have also identified that since his time with us that he has been more receptive to learning new skills and that his general presentation is by far “calmer” that they have been used to. We have encouraged K to use his iPad to communicate with us and have recently introduced picture cards to try and establish his preferred way of communication. This is a work in progress however, as a team we are all agreed that we will take a united approach to communicate with K using his preferred methods to again maximise his full potential.
We have been able to gain both insight and knowledge from this gentleman and we believe that since joining us we have seen a far happier and content individual due to the ongoing support he receives from a dedicated and consistent staff team.

Above all, his mother has been able to focus on her own health needs, confident in knowing that her son is being supported and cared for in an environment within which he is thriving.
